How much does game QA testing cost?
Outsourced game QA is usually priced per tester hour, per test cycle or per tester per month. QA company Snoopgame puts it at $15 to $50 per tester hour in 2026, $1,000 to $5,000 for a single test cycle on a small mobile game, and $2,500 to $8,000 a month for a dedicated tester. They sell QA, so treat those as one vendor's view. Your platforms, how big the game is and how often you ship builds move the number the most.
- Outsourced QA: about $15 to $50 per tester hour (Snoopgame, 2026), and $35 to $75 in Western Europe and North America.
- A single test cycle: often $1,000 to $15,000 depending on scope, and $1,000 to $5,000 for a small mobile game.
- A dedicated tester: about $2,500 to $8,000 a month.
- Playtesting for fun and feel can be free with Steam Playtest, friends and your community. QA for bugs is the part worth paying for.
- The fastest way to a real quote: your platforms, a build, what changed, and how many hours or passes you want.
I'm not going to make up numbers. The clearest public prices come from QA companies, and they have a reason to sell, so I've said where each number comes from. Use them as a feel for scale, not a price list.
Playtesting and QA are different jobs
- Playtesting asks "is it fun, is it clear?" You can get a lot of this free with Steam Playtest, your Discord, game jams and friends.
- QA asks "what's broken?" A tester follows a plan, tries to break things on purpose, and writes bug reports you can act on. That's the part worth paying for, especially before a launch or a console port.
What the numbers look like
| Example | What was said | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Outsourced QA, per tester hour | $15 to $50 | Snoopgame, 2026 |
| By region, per tester hour | South and Southeast Asia $10 to $20, Eastern Europe and Latin America $15 to $30, Western Europe and North America $35 to $75 | Snoopgame, 2026 |
| One test cycle | Often $1,000 to $15,000 depending on scope; a small mobile game usually $1,000 to $5,000 | Snoopgame, 2026 |
| Dedicated tester | $2,500 to $8,000 a month | Snoopgame, 2026 |
| In-house QA hire (US) | $55,000 to $85,000 base salary, about $85,000 to $120,000 a year all in | Snoopgame, 2026 |
The same article makes a fair point: the hourly rate isn't the cost. A cheaper tester who needs three passes to find what a better one finds in one costs you more. Compare the bug reports, not just the rate.
What makes QA cost more
- Platforms and devices. Every platform, controller and phone model you support adds testing time.
- Game size. More levels, systems and save states mean longer passes.
- How often you ship builds. Testing every update costs more than one pass before launch.
- Console certification. Checking against a platform holder's rules is its own skill.
- Localization testing. Checking every language in the build adds a pass per language.
How to budget QA for your game
- Use free playtests for fun and feel, and save paid QA for launch builds, big updates and ports.
- Write down your platforms, hardware and what changed in each build so testers don't waste hours.
- Ask for sample bug reports before you hire. Good ones have steps to reproduce, expected vs actual, how often it happens, and a video.
- Start with one small paid pass, like a set number of hours on one platform, before booking more.
- Agree on build access and an NDA up front.
Tip: When you post a role on IndieGuild, list your platforms, engine, how many hours you want tested and your budget. QA testers who fit can tell right away if it's their kind of work.
Frequently asked questions
How much does game QA testing cost?
QA company Snoopgame puts outsourced game QA at $15 to $50 per tester hour in 2026, $1,000 to $5,000 for one test cycle on a small mobile game, and $2,500 to $8,000 a month for a dedicated tester.
Can I test my indie game for free?
For fun and feel, often yes: Steam Playtest, your Discord, game jams and friends. For finding bugs in a planned, repeatable way before launch, paid QA is usually worth it.
What should a good bug report include?
A clear title, the build and platform, steps to reproduce, what you expected and what happened, how often it happens, how bad it is, and a video or screenshot.
Is IndieGuild free?
Yes. IndieGuild is free for developers and creators, and I don't take a cut of anything you pay people. Pay and rights are agreed directly between you and the person you hire.
