Where to find a composer, sound designer or voice actor for your indie game
The main places indie devs hire audio people are Reddit (r/gameDevClassifieds), Fiverr, SoundBetter, Discord servers, Casting Call Club for voices, and game-focused sites like ComposerScout. Each is good at something different. Here is an honest look at all of them.
I run ComposerScout, so take my take on it with that in mind. I've tried to be fair to everyone, because the right place depends on what you need.
| Where | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| r/gameDevClassifieds | Free posting, lots of replies, all three crafts. | You'll sort through a lot of DMs, and quality varies. |
| Fiverr | Fast, fixed-price gigs and buyer protection. | Mostly general freelancers, not game specialists. Fees on both sides. |
| SoundBetter | Vetted music pros: producers, mixers, singers. | Built for music production more than game audio. |
| Discord servers | Meeting people in game dev and game audio communities. | Every server has its own rules about promo and hiring posts. |
| Casting Call Club | Voice casting with auditions, paid and hobby projects. | Voice only. Many projects there are unpaid, so make paid ones clear. |
| ComposerScout | Hearing music, sound and voices over your gameplay before you message anyone. Free. | New, so there are fewer profiles today than on the big sites. |
r/gameDevClassifieds
A subreddit where devs post jobs and creators post "for hire" threads. Tag your post as paid, rev-share or hobby and include your budget. Expect a flood of replies on paid posts, so ask for a link to game work in the first message.
Fiverr
Huge, fast and easy to pay through. You'll find good people, but you're searching alongside jingle writers and beat makers. Look for sellers with real game credits and loops in their portfolio.
SoundBetter
A marketplace for music professionals. Strong for vocals, mixing and production. Fewer people there specialize in game loops, sound effects or character voices.
Discord servers
Game dev and game audio communities are where a lot of indie hiring really happens. Read each server's rules first, share your game, and post in the hiring channel if there is one.
Casting Call Club
The go-to for voice casting. Post your roles with lines to read, and actors send auditions. Put the pay right in the title so serious actors find you.
ComposerScout
This is mine. Composers, sound designers and voice actors tag their work by scene, mood and genre. You drop in a gameplay clip and hear their samples over it, then message the person directly. You can also post an open role and let people pitch you. It's free, we take no cut, and studios say up front whether they use AI.
Looking for art or VFX?
Artists and VFX artists mostly show their work on portfolio sites like ArtStation and itch.io, on social media, and in game dev and real-time VFX communities. ComposerScout has artists and VFX artists too, and you can see their pieces next to your own game. See where to find art and VFX for your indie game, or start with how to find an artist or how to find a VFX artist.
Wherever you look: ask for game work, hear it over your own gameplay, and agree on rights in writing. Here's how pricing usually works.
